Nigerian nurse charged with murder in scalding death of 23month-old in New York
According to a report by Mail Online, 54 year old nurse practitioner Oluyemisi Adebayo (pictured left) has been arrested and charged in the killing of a disabled toddler who was submerged in scalding bath water for about 30 second. Adebayo was arrested on Wednesday April 28th in Queens, New York just as she was about to board a flight to Nigeria, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Authorities say Adebayo was taking care of 23-month-old Naomi Mondesire on April 21 when she prepared her for a bath.
Doctors told police Adebayo's account of how the baby was burned was inconsistent with the nature of her injuries, according to a criminal complaint.
Police say Naomi was submerged up to her waist in 130-degree water for 30 seconds. The little girl died from thermal injuries to 50 per cent of her body Monday, three days after doctors at Nassau University Medical Center performed surgery on her.
Naomi's grandmother was heartbroken and furious at the woman she had hired to look after the little girl just one day before she was scalded.
Gardite Mondesire, 54, said she returned to her apartment on Memphis Avenue in the Rosedale section of Queens at around 7.25pm Tuesday to find her tenant running around the home picking up pieces of her granddaughter's skin.
When she got Adebayo on the phone, the nurse allegedly claimed she didn't know how Naomi got scalded.
'She said "It’s bad. I did something bad. The baby got burned,”' Mondesire told the New York Daily News. 'But she said she didn’t know how.'
Corey Brock, Naomi's father, challenged Adebayo's claims that she had tested the water before placing his daughter in the tub.

She claimed it was a mistake. She claimed she checked the water. It’s impossible,’ Brock told CBS News. ‘If she had checked the water, she would have been burnt also.’
Brock also pointed out that had the nurse been innocent, she would not have tried to flee the country Wednesday night.
The 54-year-old was detained at John F. Kennedy International Airport at around 7am while trying to board a flight to Nigeria via London.
Adebayo, who according to her LinkedIn page has been a licensed nurse practitioner for more than 16 years, could face up to 25 years to life in convicted.
‘The defendant had been trained to heal and save lives – which she is accused of failing to fulfill,’ DA Brown said in a press release. ‘The tiny victim suffered extraordinarily painful injuries for several days before she died. This is a terribly sad and tragic case that could have been prevented.’
Naomi's mother, 32-year-old Cynthia Mondesire, said she had had two miscarriages before giving birth to Naomi - her only surviving child.
‘With everything that she’s gone through, she was a fighter,’ Ms Mondesire told the News. ‘She was just starting to thrive.’
Before Naomi passed away Monday, her grandmother said she told the dying girl she was sorry and the child squeezed her finger in response. She will be laid to rest Saturday. Culled from UK Daily Mail

President Goodluck Jonathan pledged Thursday in Abuja that he will do all within his powers to ensure that all Nigerian territory still held by terrorists and insurgents are totally liberated before May 29, 2015. Receiving a delegation of Heads of Customs from the West and Central African Region of the World Customs Organisation led by the Secretary-General of the organisation, Mr. Kunio Mikuriya, President Jonathan said that he was determined to hand over a country completely free of terrorist strongholds to the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari.
The President said that ongoing military operations in the North-East had already recorded huge successes, with two states completely free from the control of terrorists, while operations in the third state had reached a concluding stage. “We can now say two states are completely free from terrorist control, while in the third state, it is only in one Local Government Area that they are still present.
That is in the Sambisa Forest,” he said. President Jonathan noted that the military had already moved into the forest to seize the remaining camps of the terrorists, adding that the recent rescue of about 300 abducted girls and women was further evidence of the success being achieved in the ongoing operation.
On his decision to concede victory to the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, before all the results of the presidential elections were announced, President Jonathan said that elections must be approached from a nationalistic point of view. “Our elections should be about where Nigeria is going. If Nigeria is moving forward, it is for the good of all Nigerians. My children and grandchildren will live and grow in this country and contribute to it. I always tell my colleagues to leave office when their time is up. We are trying to encourage African leaders not to remain in power as kings until death,’’ he said.
Mr. Mikuriya commended the President for supporting the reform of the Nigeria Customs Service, noting that other African countries had already started emulating the vision, strategy, adoption to new technology and result- oriented training of officers that were captured in Nigeria’s reforms. Belgian footballer dies after collapsing during a match
The former Belgium Under-21 international fell during the first half of a match on Monday April 27th. He was first treated on the pitch but when they realized it was serious, he was rushed to the hospital where he was placed on life support. His condition didn't improve and today his family agreed his life support should be switched off. He passed away around 4pm today.
"Gregory was only one-and-a-half years at the club, but in that short time his quiet modesty made him an indispensable person. Now we will have to learn to live with the loss." his club said in a statement. May his soul rest in peace, amen.

Pregnant 10-year-old Girl 'Denied Life-Saving Abortion after being Raped by Stepfather'
The child was found to be 21 weeks pregnant after arriving at hospital in Asunción, Paraguay, this month complaining of stomach pains.
Amnesty International reports that the girl’s pregnancy came as a result of being raped by her stepfather, but she has allegedly been denied a life-saving abortion and sent to a centre for young
mothers instead.
Latin America is known for its strict anti-abortion laws, with five of the seven countries in the world where termination is banned in all instances there. Abortion is legal in Paraguay, however, when the life of the woman or girl is at risk.
The director of the hospital in Asunción acknowledged publicly that the girl was in danger and on 28 April her mother formally requested an abortion. Why she has been sent to a centre for young mothers is not known.

APC Will Win Entire South-East in 2019 – Rochas Okorocha
NAN reports that Okorocha gave the assurance while speaking with newsmen at the end of his closed-door meeting with Buhari at the Defence House in Abuja. He claimed that the region played a key role in Buhari’s victory in the just-concluded general elections compared to 2011 general elections.
“The South-East played a very key role in the victory of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, considering what happened in 2011 when the Peoples Democratic Party returned about seven million votes. We came to reassure him that in the next dispensation, the entire South-East will be APC,’’ he said.The governor expressed optimism that the region would advance under Buhari’s leadership,
describing him as a “fair person, who believes in justice, equity and fair play’’.

We know that the South-East will not be left out in the political equation of Nigeria in terms of distribution of infrastructure and federal appointments,’’ he said.On zoning of positions in the party, Okorocha said that no position had been zoned to anyone, adding that a committee had been set up to review the allocation and distribution of appointments in Nigeria.
He also said that the issue of a president emerging from the South-East was still early and urged all to pray for success of the in-coming administration. He prayed for God’s wisdom and health to enable Buhari carry out the task of governance in Nigeria, and assured him of the support of the South-East.

PDP will bounce back in 2019-President Jonathan
Speaking after receiving the report of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organization at the Presidential Villa, President Jonathan said that the party already had all that it will require to win the 2019 elections, but needed to return to the drawing board to re-strategize for the future.
“Whatever happened was like a slip. You don’t need to travel to America to know how power moves from the Republicans to the Democrats and from the Democrats to the Republicans.You can even go to Ghana that is very close to us. The present administration lost some years back and of course they came back, and won the elections.Noting that the outcome of future elections will be determined by the party’s preparedness, President Jonathan urged members of the PDP to be more united and remain loyal to the party.So the problem is not whether we lost or won elections, which is already history, but how we can reconsolidate our party.If we are committed and we work hard, definitely the PDP will spring back,” President Jonathan told members of the party’s Presidential Campaign Organisation.
“We must continue to be united as a party. And continue to work hard so that as we move towards subsequent elections in 2019 and 2023, PDP will come out stronger.In his remarks at the occasion, the Director General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Sen. Ahmadu Ali, commended President Jonathan for putting the nation before his personal ambition.
“Let’s not judge PDP by the results of the presidential elections, because in some of the states where we saw the PDP score so low, it was probably due to problems within the PDP.
“The party will come back stronger. PDP is still the most organized party. PDP is still the party that nobody owns. PDP is still the party that whoever you are, you can get to any level that you aspire to through competence. I encourage members of our party to remain faithful and not be disillusioned,’’ the President said.
